A devastating plane crash in Ahmedabad, India, on Thursday afternoon has raised fears of more than 294 fatalities. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft, which had taken off en route to London’s Gatwick Airport, lost control just minutes after takeoff and crashed into a residential area.
Soon after takeoff, the aircraft lost altitude and slammed into a multi-story residential building, triggering a massive explosion. The crash site is located in a densely populated area between a hospital and the city's Horse Camp district, not far from the airport.
There were a total of 242 people onboard the plane, including:

169 Indian nationals,
-
53 British nationals,
-
7 Portuguese nationals,
-
1 Canadian national, and
-
12 crew members.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated:
“I am deeply saddened to hear about the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad. My thoughts and prayers are with all those who have lost loved ones in this horrific incident. We are closely monitoring the situation and stand with the emergency responders working to assist the victims.”
He further added that the United States is cooperating with Indian authorities to provide assistance.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney also expressed deep condolences to the people of India.
International Investigative Support:
The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) announced that it is dispatching a team of experts to work jointly with the Indian investigative team. In a statement, they said:
“According to international agreements, all investigative updates and information will be released by the Government of India.”
The United Kingdom is also deploying a team from its Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) to support the investigation in India.
Rescue operations are still ongoing at the crash site. DNA testing is being used to identify the charred bodies. Many of the injured remain in critical condition and are receiving treatment in hospital ICUs. The fire service, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and military are jointly conducting the rescue operation.
This incident is being regarded as one of the deadliest plane crashes in India in recent times
