Riyadh: U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he will lift the long‑standing American sanctions on Syria, which were imposed during President Bashar al‑Assad’s rule.

Speaking at a high‑level conference in Riyadh, Trump said, “A new government has been formed in Syria, which we hope will succeed in stabilizing the country and maintaining peace.”

He added, “I will order the removal of sanctions on Syria so that they can once again move forward on the path to greatness.” Upon hearing this announcement, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) and everyone present gave a standing ovation.

Trump noted that later this week in Turkey, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will meet with Syria’s foreign minister. He explained that the decision to lift the sanctions comes after discussions with MBS and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Jokingly, he said, “I would do anything for the Crown Prince.” His remark drew laughter throughout the conference hall.

Analysts believe this decision could create a new strategic equation in the Middle East, with the United States prepared to restore relations with a rebuilt Syria. The move is also significant for Syria’s economy and its international recognition.
