According to a report by Anadolu Agency, a humanitarian aid ship bound for Gaza carrying 16 passengers was rescued by Malta's armed forces after being damaged in a drone strike, local media reported on Friday.
Citing an official government statement, Malta’s public broadcaster TVM reported that the “Freedom Flotilla” vessel sent out an SOS signal after the drone attack, prompting assistance from a tugboat equipped with firefighting equipment.
In a press release, the Freedom Flotilla Coalition stated that the drone strike completely disabled the ship’s electrical systems, putting it at “serious risk of sinking.”
The Maltese government confirmed that, at the request of the tugboat, a patrol vessel from the Armed Forces of Malta was also dispatched to the scene.
The statement added, “By 2:13 a.m. (0013 GMT), it was confirmed that all persons on board were safe, although none of them agreed to abandon the ship.”
It further noted that the situation was brought under control by 3:45 a.m. (0145 GMT).
The ship, named Conscience, is still located in international waters, and the relevant authorities are monitoring the situation.
