According to a CBS News report, National Security Advisor Mike Waltz is stepping down from his position at the White House. However, shortly after news of his departure surfaced, President Donald Trump announced that he intends to nominate Waltz as the next U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations.

As of Thursday afternoon, it was not yet confirmed whether Waltz’s deputy, Alex Wang, would remain on the National Security Council (NSC), according to sources.

The president stated on social media that, for now, Secretary of State Marco Rubio will assume the responsibilities of National Security Advisor. Waltz will need Senate confirmation to be officially appointed as ambassador.

“I am pleased to announce that I will be nominating Mike Waltz as the next United States Ambassador to the United Nations,” President Trump wrote. “From the battlefield in uniform, to Congress, and as National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz has always prioritized our national interests. I know he will continue to do the same in his new role. For the time being, Secretary of State Marco Rubio will serve as National Security Advisor.”

Waltz wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “I’m deeply honored to have the opportunity to once again serve President Trump and our great nation.”

Sources told CBS News that this was a last-minute decision, although discussions about removing Waltz from the NSC had been ongoing.

Several factors were behind the change. The White House reportedly believed that Waltz had not properly vetted the NSC staff. Additionally, the “Signal” controversy and his difficulties integrating with the senior team contributed to the decision.

However, sources say President Trump respects Waltz and, unlike many others in his previous term, did not abruptly dismiss him. Instead, he reassigned him to a high-profile role. Journalist Mark Halperin was the first to report Waltz’s resignation.

In the Trump administration, nothing is usually final until the president makes the announcement himself.

State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce learned of Rubio’s new role while at a press conference. When a reporter asked how long Rubio would serve in the position, Bruce responded, “This is the first I’m hearing of it.”

Sources added that White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles was holding discussions with NSC staff on Thursday.
