Ottawa, April 28 – U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff policies and the high cost of living in Canada are the two central issues as Canadian voters head to the polls today, Monday, for the national election. The outcome of the vote is expected to determine the country’s future economic strategy and its relationship with the United States.
Mark Carney, leader of the Liberal Party, who succeeded Justin Trudeau as the new Prime Minister last month, is presenting himself as a leader who has worked as a central banker during times of economic instability and is ready to face tough opponents like Trump.
On the other hand, Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre has also promised to take a strong stance against Trump. However, he argues that a decade of weak economic performance under Trudeau’s Liberal government has left Canada more vulnerable to the U.S.’s hostile trade policies.
According to the latest public opinion poll, the Liberal Party is in the lead with around 43% of the vote, while the Conservatives are slightly above 39%. The New Democratic Party (NDP) holds about 9%, and the Bloc Québécois stands at 6%, according to CBC’s tracker.
Analysts believe the election results will play a crucial role in shaping Canada’s future trade policies, its relationship with the United States, and strategies to combat domestic inflation.
