According to a report by AP, the United States and Iran held intense, hours-long expert-level discussions in Oman on Saturday regarding Iran’s rapidly advancing nuclear program. The talks concluded with the possibility of another high-level meeting next week.
Following the discussions, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told Iranian state television, “This round of talks was much more serious and productive than previous ones. We are gradually entering deeper and more detailed discussions. However, differences still remain on key issues and some specifics.”
A source close to U.S. Special Envoy for Middle East Affairs, Steve Witkoff, said the talks had both started and concluded, with a significant portion involving the exchange of written proposals. The source spoke on condition of anonymity.
Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr Al-Busaidi, who mediated the previous two rounds of talks, posted a positive message on X (formerly Twitter), saying, “Both sides have expressed a desire to reach an agreement based on mutual respect and sustainable commitment. Discussions covered fundamental principles, objectives, and technical issues.”
Notably, shortly after the talks began, a powerful explosion occurred at a port in southern Iran, killing four people and injuring over 500. Although the exact cause of the explosion was not immediately disclosed, it is believed to have involved highly flammable materials. A private security firm reported that the port had received materials used in missile propellant production.
U.S. President Donald Trump, who is currently in Rome attending Pope Francis’s funeral, said during a press briefing, “I hope there will be a deal through dialogue—that would be best for humanity. But if not, we have other options ready.”
Analysts believe the outcome of these talks could have a significant impact on the stability of the Middle East and global security.
