Presidents Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron to Make State Visits to the UK Around the Same Time
London, April 20 —
French President Emmanuel Macron is likely to visit the United Kingdom on a state visit ahead of U.S. President Donald Trump, according to The Sunday Times. The report states that King Charles III has invited Macron for the visit in late May.
This would be Macron’s first official state visit to the UK, whereas Trump is set to make his second, scheduled for September. This marks a unique event for Trump, as he would become the first individual to receive a second state visit honor.
The Sunday Times noted that very few government and royal officials have been informed of Macron’s visit, and there has been no official confirmation yet from either 10 Downing Street or the French government.
Earlier this year, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer handed President Trump a historic state invitation on behalf of King Charles. Since then, plans for a September meeting between King Charles and Trump at Windsor have been circulating. Initially, Balmoral or Dumfries House were considered as venues, but Windsor Castle is now the most likely location.
Macron’s visit is also expected to take place at Windsor, due to ongoing renovations at Buckingham Palace.
These two high-profile diplomatic visits come at a time when the Starmer government is striving to balance relations with both the U.S. and Europe. Prime Minister Starmer has repeatedly emphasized that the UK must maintain close ties with Europe while also strengthening trade relations with the U.S., suggesting that one should not come at the cost of the other.
Meanwhile, UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves is scheduled to visit the U.S. next week, where she is expected to discuss a broad economic agreement with American officials aimed at mitigating the impact of Trump’s proposed 10% tariff.
These diplomatic efforts and upcoming state visits are seen as part of a strategic initiative by the Starmer government to rebuild the UK’s global relationships and maintain a balanced international stance.
