Recently, when interim government head Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus announced that a national election would be held by June, it sparked widespread discussion on social media—following the release of a photo card from popular Bangladeshi TV channel, Jamuna TV.
Hundreds of people commented on the post, expressing that they do not want an election at this moment. The majority shared a common sentiment:
“We don’t believe in voting, we want Dr. Yunus.”
Some were more direct, saying:
“If there's an election, the same old devils will return.”
Others wrote:
“Dr. Yunus is clever in governance—he can run the country.”
Other notable comments included:
-
“Earlier we wanted votes, now we want people.”
-
“We trust no one except Dr. Yunus.”
-
“Stop the drama in the name of elections and let him do his work.”
Many also mentioned that, for the first time, they are feeling interested in politics—because they are seeing a leader with a “clean image.”
On the other hand, a smaller group of commenters welcomed Dr. Yunus’s announcement, saying that elections are the foundation of democracy. However, the overwhelming majority of comments favored directly handing over power to Dr. Yunus instead of holding an election.
These reactions suggest a new wave of public opinion in Bangladeshi politics, where people are beginning to support an alternative form of leadership.
