Washington, April 12, 2025:
The Pentagon has dismissed Colonel Suzannah Myers, commander of the Pituffik Space Base in Greenland, following internal comments that appeared to contradict Vice President J.D. Vance’s recent public remarks during his visit to the base.
In an internal email sent to base personnel on March 31, Colonel Myers wrote:
“I don’t fully understand current political matters, but I do know that the concerns Vice President Vance expressed on Friday do not reflect the position of Pituffik Space Base.”
She added,
“I’ve spent the entire weekend reflecting on what was said, what was done, and how it may have impacted you.”
Military.com first reported on the email. Following the report, the U.S. Space Force released a statement citing “loss of confidence in leadership” as the reason for Myers’ removal.
The statement read:
“Commanders are expected to maintain neutrality and uphold the highest ethical standards.”
Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell wrote on X (formerly Twitter):
“Any effort to undermine the chain of command or the policies of President Trump will not be tolerated at the Department of Defense.”
Colonel Sean Lee has now taken command of Pituffik, according to the Space Force. Lee previously served as squadron commander at Clear Space Force Station in Alaska.
Praise from Republican Officials
Following the dismissal, several Republican lawmakers voiced their support for the decision on X, including Senator Tommy Tuberville (Alabama), Senator Eric Schmitt (Missouri), and Representative Jim Banks (Indiana).
Jim Banks commented:
“Colonel Myers tried to politicize the Space Force, and she has been held accountable.”
Vice President Vance’s Remarks
During his visit, Vice President J.D. Vance criticized Denmark, saying:
“Denmark has treated the people of Greenland like second-class citizens.”
He also accused the Danish government of failing to adequately protect Greenland from Chinese and Russian threats.
According to the White House, Vice President Vance is now the highest-ranking U.S. official ever to visit the Pituffik base.
Trump Administration’s Stance
President Donald Trump reiterated his administration’s firm position on Greenland, stating:
“We need Greenland, and the world needs us to be there. Denmark must understand that our presence is essential for international security.”
He added:
“We will go as far as we need to. Because without Greenland, global security is not possible.”
