Tensions have recently escalated regarding Israel's strikes in Syria. The Israeli attack on the Golan Heights region and other Syrian territories is being viewed as a severe violation of Syria's sovereignty. The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has described the attack as a "clear violation of sovereignty."
How and Where Did the Attack Occur? According to the Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on April 2, Israel targeted the Hama airport, a significant Syrian military airbase. Many people were injured in the attack. Additionally, Israel also targeted the T-4 airport near the city of Palmyra, one of the largest and strategically important airports in central Syria.
On April 5, Israel opened fire in the Nawa area of the Daraa province in southern Syria, killing nine civilians and injuring several others.
Are Syria and Israel on Good Terms? Israel and Syria have never had formal relations. Under the leadership of President Ahmed al-Shara, Syria has always stated that they do not want war with Israel and will not allow external powers to use Syria as a battleground.
Israel has also expressed frustration with the Syrian government, labeling them as "terrorist groups in Idlib." They have further referred to the current Syrian government as the "Hayat Tahrir al-Sham" (HTS) group.
Why Is Israel Attacking Syria? Israel claims that these attacks are to maintain its security. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in February, "We will not allow HTS or new Syrian forces to enter southern Damascus."
Israel has also established military positions in Syria, and according to them, peace in the region can only be maintained if foreign forces are removed from Syrian territory.
Turkey's Reaction Turkey's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement last Thursday, calling for Israel to withdraw its forces from Syria. Turkey claims that for Syria to establish peace, Israel must abandon its expansionist policies.
What Will Syria Do? Although Syria wants to put up resistance against its enemies, it has little to no resources, as the country has been devastated by a 14-year-long civil war. The current Syrian government has also found it difficult to receive assistance or cooperation from other countries.
Syrian writer Robin Yassin-Kassab stated, "It is not the Syrian government but the common people who are sacrificing their lives to protect their areas." He further added, "Israeli media is presenting these local people as HTS members, which helps to legitimize their attacks."
The ongoing Israeli attacks and territorial expansion in Syria have raised new concerns within the international community. Particularly, Turkey and Iran have strongly criticized Israel's actions. However, Syria has limited international aid, and its people continue to resist.
