Trump and Xi Jinping May Meet Soon
Washington, March 10 – U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping may meet as early as April, despite the ongoing trade war and trade tensions between the two countries.
According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP), initial discussions about Trump's potential visit to China have taken place, but no specific progress has been made. However, sources within the Chinese government have indicated that both sides are actively discussing the possibility of a meeting between Trump and Xi Jinping in April, although the exact dates have not been finalized.
Xi Prefers a Formal Meeting
One source revealed that Trump is eager to invite Xi to his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, but Beijing is pushing for a more formal meeting, which could take place either in China or the U.S.
For Xi, hosting Trump immediately after the Chinese Communist Party's two sessions would be considered a diplomatic victory, the source claimed.
Trump’s Potential Visit to China
Earlier reports had hinted that Trump might visit China within 100 days of his inauguration. Trump visited China in November 2017 during his first term, receiving a grand welcome, including a formal dinner in the capital, Beijing. However, just months later, he launched a trade war targeting China.
Escalating Trade Tensions
Any potential meeting between Trump and Xi would take place amidst escalating U.S.-China trade tensions. Trump recently announced plans to double tariffs on Chinese goods, leading China to retaliate. Additionally, an ongoing U.S. investigation into China's trade practices, initiated by Trump, is expected to conclude by April. The findings of this investigation could lead to further trade actions against China.
Despite these tensions, Trump has expressed the possibility of negotiations. In February, he stated that a new trade agreement with China was "possible."
A U.S. official told SCMP that "major signals" about Trump’s next steps on China could emerge soon.
The source also added, "Right now, Trump’s team is quiet on China because their numbers are smaller—half compared to his first term. They are now focusing more on the Ukraine issue, as Trump believes the situation in Ukraine can be resolved quickly, and it is much less complicated compared to China."
