Manchester United drew 2-2 at Everton in the Premier League, though late VAR penalty drama left Everton frustrated. Manuel Ugarte, who scored his first club goal in four years, equalized for United in the 80th minute.
The Uruguayan midfielder scored after a free kick by Bruno Fernandes, which marked the start of United’s fightback at Everton. United had been on track for a third consecutive loss after first-half goals from Beto and Abdoulaye Doucouré.
However, in the dying moments, Everton was awarded a penalty for a foul by Harry Maguire on Ashley Young. But after a VAR review, the on-field referee reversed his initial decision.
Everton faded in the second half, and United capitalized on the opportunity, though the comeback did not mask the bigger problems facing the club. United are currently in 15th place, which is disappointing and unexpected for the team.
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes admitted after the match, “We had chances in the second half, but we started the game too late. We couldn’t settle in the first half.”
United coach Ruben Amorim stated, “Our focus now is to take each day at a time and achieve better results for the remainder of this season.”
Everton, under new manager David Moyes, has maintained an unbeaten run of six matches.
