Qatar’s Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani has stated that regional challenges create a "necessity for coordination." The Emir of Qatar held talks in Tehran with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian as part of a state visit. Sheikh Tamim told reporters, "I am pleased to visit Iran today, especially at a time when the region is witnessing many challenges and developments, which create the need for coordination."

Pezeshkian stated that the two countries have strong relations and share "similar viewpoints" on regional and international issues. This meeting comes at a time of heightened tensions in the region, especially following prolonged conflict in Lebanon and Gaza, with a fragile ceasefire in place, and the establishment of an interim government in Syria after the removal of President Bashar al-Assad.

The leaders discussed "the unity of Syrian territories and the participation of all groups in Syria to determine their future," said Sheikh Tamim. Pezeshkian thanked Qatar for its mediation efforts in securing a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.

They also discussed expanding economic relations. Sheikh Tamim emphasized, "We confirmed the necessity of exploring more opportunities in the field of trade and economy between our two countries."

Tohid Asadi, a professor of politics at the University of Tehran, described the meeting as "critically important." He said, "We heard the two leaders emphasize the necessity of peace in the region and the expansion of economic relations."

Sheikh Tamim is expected to later meet with Iran's spiritual leader and highest authority, Ayatollah Khamenei, Asadi added.
