Sao Paulo: The Brazilian government announced on Saturday that the upcoming BRICS summit will take place in Rio de Janeiro on July 6-7. Brazil will chair the bloc until 2025 and focus on promoting cooperation among Global South countries and reforming global governance, according to a statement from the federal government.

The BRICS bloc was established in 2009 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, and in 2010, South Africa joined, creating a strong counterbalance to the Group of Seven (G7) wealthy nations. Last year, the bloc expanded by including Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, and the United Arab Emirates, and Saudi Arabia has also been invited to join. Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Malaysia have applied for membership, and several other countries have expressed interest.

Recently, the bloc welcomed Indonesia as its 11th member and Nigeria as a "partner country," a new honorary status announced at the 2024 Kazan summit. Brazil has stated that partner countries will also be invited to participate in the summit and may attend other meetings if there is consensus among members.

Brazil's Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira said, "We will make crucial decisions for the development, cooperation, and improvement of the lives of the people in these countries."

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to impose 100% tariffs on BRICS countries if they take actions to undermine the U.S. dollar.
