Munich, February 13, 2025: A car drove into a crowd in Munich, Germany, injuring approximately 28 people. Police reported that the car was driven by a 24-year-old Afghan asylum seeker, who has been arrested. The attack is initially being considered an assault.

Bavaria's state premier, Markus Söder, stated that this was likely an attack. The incident occurred on Thursday, as international leaders, including U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, were arriving in Munich for the Munich Security Conference.

Police said the car initially approached police vehicles that were accompanying a protest march, before suddenly speeding into the crowd. The police also reported that a shot was fired at the suspected driver, but it is unclear whether he was injured.

Authorities have not yet been able to determine the motive behind the attack, but Bavaria's Interior Minister Joachim Hermann stated that the suspect was previously known to the police for drug and shoplifting offenses.

Ahead of Germany's national elections on February 23, security has become a major issue in the campaign. Following other violent incidents in recent months, conservatives are leading in the polls, followed by the far-right party.
