Washington, January 28 – U.S. President Donald Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a "constructive" phone call on Monday, discussing a range of issues including trade, defense procurement, and immigration. The White House reported that the two leaders agreed to further deepen the U.S.-India strategic partnership.
After the call, Trump told reporters that Modi would visit the United States in February. The White House confirmed that the call included discussions on the planning of Modi’s visit.
During the conversation, Trump emphasized the importance of India purchasing more American-made defense equipment and highlighted the need for a fair bilateral trade relationship.
Expanding Strategic Cooperation and Trade
The two leaders discussed enhancing cooperation on security issues in the Indo-Pacific, the Middle East, and Europe. U.S.-India bilateral trade surpassed $118 billion in the 2023-24 fiscal year, with India maintaining a trade surplus of $32 billion.
Commitment to the Quad
The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the Quad grouping (comprising the U.S., India, Australia, and Japan). India is set to host this year’s Quad leaders' summit.
Immigration Discussions
Trump also raised the issue of immigration with Modi, expressing confidence that Modi would make "the right decision" to repatriate illegal Indian immigrants. India and the U.S. have identified approximately 18,000 illegal Indian immigrants. However, Trump reiterated his support for lawful immigration for skilled workers.
Modi described the phone call as "productive" and reaffirmed the commitment to a mutually beneficial partnership between the two nations.
Challenges in India-Russia Relations
Analysts believe India may face challenges from the U.S. over its close ties with long-time ally Russia. However, the Trump administration is prioritizing immigration and trade in its bilateral agenda with India.
