Palm Desert, California, January 14: Canada's Ambassador Kirsten Hillman said on Monday that Canada is prepared to buy more American products, including its next fleet of submarines, to address U.S. President-elect Donald Trump's concerns about the U.S.-Canada trade deficit.
In an interview, Hillman stated, "We are ready to buy whatever we can from the United States. We have some big military procurements coming up, such as replacing our entire submarine fleet. Maybe those purchases will come from the U.S." She also mentioned that 70% of Canada's military procurement comes from the United States, including a plan to purchase 88 F-35 fighter jets.
Hillman warned that if Trump goes ahead with his plan to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian products, it will lead to higher prices for Americans. She also dismissed Trump's suggestion that Canada become the 51st U.S. state, calling it a rumor and part of Trump's negotiation style.
Alberta's Premier Danielle Smith also stated that Canada would try to reduce the trade deficit by buying more U.S. products in response to Trump's tariff threat. Smith met with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort over the weekend.
Hillman further mentioned that Canada had a $75 billion trade deficit with the U.S. last year, with one-third of Canada's exports to the U.S. being energy resources.
