The 4th International Language League 2026, presented by Bakeman’s Biscuits, concluded with a prize-giving ceremony at North South University (NSU) in Dhaka on Saturday. The event brought together students, educators, government officials, and distinguished guests to celebrate linguistic excellence and academic achievements.
Organized by the Department of English and Modern Languages (DEML) of North South University in collaboration with its partners, the competition aimed to promote language proficiency, creativity, effective communication, and multilingual education among students across Bangladesh.
State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Bobby Hajjaj attended the ceremony as chief guest. Addressing the gathering, he emphasized the importance of combining language proficiency with technical knowledge to develop a skilled workforce and strengthen Bangladesh’s economy.
He noted that language is not merely a means of communication but also an essential tool for acquiring skills, exchanging knowledge, and achieving social and economic progress.
Highlighting Bangladesh’s ambition to become a trillion-dollar economy by 2034, Hajjaj stressed the need to prioritize human resource development through technical education and proficiency in internationally important languages, particularly English and Chinese.
He further emphasized that language education should extend beyond academic examinations and focus on practical communication, professional development, and real-world applications.
Referring to China’s experience, the State Minister encouraged expanding scientific and technological education in Bangla while strengthening international language skills to improve global communication, knowledge exchange, and trade opportunities.
The ceremony was chaired by Professor Abdul Hannan Chowdhury, Vice-Chancellor of North South University. Special guests included Benzir Ahmed, a member of the university’s Board of Trustees, and the Cultural Counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Bangladesh.
The International Language League featured competitions in multiple languages, including Bangla, English, Chinese, German, and French. Students from primary school to university level participated in spelling bees, handwriting competitions, grammar challenges, debates, impromptu speeches, and creative writing contests.
Following nationwide divisional selection rounds, the national finale took place on October 9, with the prize-giving ceremony held the following day. Outstanding participants were recognized with medals, certificates, and gifts for their achievements.
The ceremony featured speeches, award presentations, and interactions among students and educators, creating an atmosphere of celebration and encouragement for young language enthusiasts.
