Andy Burnham has officially been confirmed as the new leader of the UK Labour Party at a special Labour conference. Shabana Mahmood, chair of the National Executive Committee (NEC), announced that the party's leadership election had been conducted in accordance with Labour rules and that the returning officer had confirmed all eligibility requirements had been met.

"It's hardly a nail-biter, folks," Mahmood joked, noting that despite a lone nomination for Catherine West from MP Neil Coyle, there was only one eligible candidate.

Nomination Results

Andy Burnham received 379 nominations from Labour MPs, comfortably exceeding the 20% parliamentary threshold required to qualify.

He also secured 23 nominations from affiliated trade unions and socialist societies, including support from all 11 affiliated trade unions.

The only other candidate received one nomination, making them ineligible to contest the leadership.

Mahmood then declared:

"There being no other eligible nominated candidate, it is therefore my honour to declare that the duly elected leader of the Labour Party is Andy Burnham."

Burnham: "We Will Give People Hope Back"

In his acceptance speech, Burnham described the moment as historic and pledged to restore hope to communities that have felt neglected.

"We are united today, and we put the power that comes from that unity at the service of people and places who have been waiting too long for politics to let them hope again. We're going to give them hope back."

Tribute to Keir Starmer

Burnham paid tribute to outgoing Labour leader and Prime Minister Keir Starmer, saying he was ready to build on the foundation Starmer had laid.

"Under Keir Starmer's leadership, we went from our worst defeat to one of the best victories in our history. Keir put Labour back in a position to change people's lives."

He praised the government's achievements, including expanded workers' and renters' rights, falling NHS waiting lists, the return of rail services to public ownership, improvements to Britain's international standing, and the passage of the Hillsborough Law.

"Today we thank him for his service to our party and to our country."

Hillsborough Law

Burnham also recalled working with Starmer a decade ago to draft the original Hillsborough Law following the second Hillsborough inquest.

He said seeing the legislation finally pass this week marked a "full circle" moment, adding that the law would help end the culture of official cover-ups, empower ordinary people, and prevent other families from enduring the injustice experienced by the Hillsborough families.
