The Israeli military announced on Sunday that it had launched strikes targeting Hezbollah infrastructure in Beirut. Smoke was seen rising over the Lebanese capital following the attacks.

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the operation was carried out in response to Hezbollah attacks in northern Israel.

A week earlier, when Israel struck Beirut’s suburbs, Iran retaliated by launching missile attacks against Israel.

Iran, Hezbollah’s main backer, has insisted that any U.S.-Iran ceasefire agreement must also include an end to Israeli strikes in Lebanon. On March 2, Hezbollah fired missiles into Israel, two days after the United States and Israel attacked Iran, an event that sparked a broader conflict in the Middle East.
