Trump–Xi Phone Call: China Agrees to Accelerate and Increase Purchases of U.S. Goods, Says Trump

U.S. President Donald Trump said that during a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday, he urged Beijing to speed up and expand its purchases of American goods. According to Trump, Xi “more or less agreed” to the request.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Tuesday, Trump said:
“I asked him—I'd like you to buy it a little faster. I'd like you to buy more. And he’s more or less agreed to do that. I think we will be pleasantly surprised by the actions of President Xi.”

China has recently resumed purchases of U.S. soybeans and has halted its expanded curbs on rare earths exports. However, U.S. officials noted that the pace of purchases remains slower than Washington had initially expected.

The Trump administration hopes that the renewed commitment from Beijing will help ease ongoing trade tensions and strengthen economic cooperation between the two global powers.
