Putin-Kim Strategic Deal Becomes Russia-North Korea Defense Law

Russia has formally enacted a strategic partnership agreement with North Korea on mutual defense assistance, turning it into law. The move follows a decree published on the Russian government's official website, according to a Reuters report.

The deal was signed by North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and Russian President Vladimir Putin after a summit in Pyongyang in June. Under the agreement, both countries have pledged to come to each other's aid in the event of armed aggression.

The agreement is seen as further solidifying the ties between the two nations, particularly amidst the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Both leaders are believed to recognize the mutual benefits of this partnership: Putin requires ammunition to continue the war effort, while North Korea, under sanctions, needs financial support.

The agreement received approval from Russia’s lower house of parliament last month and the upper house last week. Following this, President Putin signed a decree to formalize the defense pact.
