Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian-American human rights activist and Columbia University graduate, has arrived at Newark Liberty International Airport after being released from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) custody. He was held for more than 100 days in a detention center in Louisiana before a federal judge ordered his release.

Khalil said, “Even if they want to detain me or kill me, I will still speak up for Palestine. This is a message that should be celebrated, not punished.”

The Trump administration had sought to deport Khalil because of his participation in protests against Israel. Although he was never charged with any crime, the government claimed his activities could be linked to Hamas.

Judge Michael Fabiarz ruled that Khalil was “no threat” and described his detention as “unusual” and “politically motivated.” He emphasized that immigration law should not be used to punish someone for political speech.

Khalil’s arrest sparked nationwide protests. He was detained in March at his apartment in New York City and immediately transferred to Louisiana, far from his family and legal team.

Following this incident, several other Palestine-supporting students and activists were also arrested, including Mohsen Mahdawi of Columbia University and Rumeysa Ozturk of Tufts University. Both were later released by court order.

Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said,
“Baseless and horrific allegations have been made against Mahmoud Khalil solely because of his political speech, violating fundamental rights in the United States.”
