“Pakistan’s Nuclear Arsenal Is for Peaceful and Defensive Purposes, Not for Aggression” – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif
[Islamabad, July 13, 2025] – Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has made it clear that the country’s nuclear arsenal is solely developed for peaceful and defensive purposes, not for any aggressive intent.
His remarks come against the backdrop of recent India-Pakistan border clashes, which, according to him, have resulted in the deaths of 55 Pakistani citizens. While affirming that Pakistan has responded with “full force,” he firmly emphasized that the situation would not escalate into a nuclear conflict.
In a speech delivered to students in Islamabad, the Prime Minister stated:
“Pakistan’s nuclear program is solely directed towards peace and national defense. It is never intended for offensive purposes.”
Context of Indian Operation
The Prime Minister’s statement comes in response to a recent Indian military operation, known as “Operation Sindhur,” launched on May 7. During this operation, India struck various militant camps across Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
The strikes were a retaliation for the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Anantnag district, where 26 innocent civilians lost their lives.
According to Indian sources, the operation targeted at least nine sites, including a Jaish-e-Mohammed training facility in Bahawalpur.
Denial of Political Rumors
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also dismissed recent political rumors—such as President Asif Ali Zardari’s alleged resignation or the possibility of Army Chief Asim Munir becoming the next president. He stated:
“Field Marshal Asim Munir has never expressed a desire to become president, nor is there any such plan.”
Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi echoed these sentiments in a post on X (formerly Twitter), describing the rumors as part of a “well-orchestrated disinformation campaign against the country’s civilian and military leadership,” allegedly backed by foreign powers.
Role of the Army Chief
It is worth noting that Asim Munir assumed the role of Army Chief in 2022 and has recently received a two-year extension to his tenure. His role has become increasingly significant amid Pakistan’s current political and security challenges.
