Carlos Alcaraz Reaches Wimbledon Final After Defeating Two-Time Champion Taylor Fritz
London | July 11, 2025 — At just 22 years old, Carlos Alcaraz is now one step away from claiming his third consecutive Wimbledon title and sixth Grand Slam victory overall. On Friday, he defeated Taylor Fritz in four sets — 6-4, 5-7, 6-3, 7-6 (6) — to secure his place in the Wimbledon final.
The second-seeded Alcaraz, currently on a 24-match winning streak, will face either top seed Jannik Sinner or 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic in the final on Sunday.
Alcaraz won his first two Wimbledon titles by defeating Djokovic in the finals in 2023 and 2024, and currently holds a perfect 5-0 record in Grand Slam finals — including a stunning comeback victory against Sinner in a five-set thriller at last month’s French Open.
Fifth seed Fritz, the 2024 US Open runner-up (also against Sinner), was trying to become the first American man since Andy Roddick in 2009 to reach a Wimbledon final.
Fourth-Set Tiebreak Turns the Match
In the fourth set tiebreak, Fritz was leading 6-4, just one point away from forcing a fifth set. But Alcaraz stormed back, winning four straight points to take the match. He celebrated the victory by stretching out his arms and yelling in joy.
Fritz played a strong, competitive match throughout. By the end of the second set, he actually led in total points and had 44 winners and 19 aces, outperforming Alcaraz's 38 winners and 13 aces. In the second set, Alcaraz double-faulted and missed a forehand, allowing Fritz to level the match at one set all.
Alcaraz’s Precision and Power Impress Celebrities
In front of tennis legend Björn Borg and celebrities Anna Wintour and Leonardo DiCaprio, Alcaraz composed himself quickly. At one point in the fourth set, when down Love–30, he fired a 134 mph ace followed by a 135 mph service winner to regain control.
Despite the pressure of the tiebreak, Fritz even paused to gently remove a butterfly from the grass during play. He then won five straight points to gain set point, but Alcaraz capitalized on four errors from his opponent to close out the match.
Extreme Heat Causes Disruptions
Under clear skies and 31°C (88°F) heat, some spectators in the crowd suffered from heat-related illness, causing play to be paused twice during the second set.
The match opened with the sound of champagne corks popping in the stands, and Alcaraz immediately broke Fritz’s serve, winning 10 of the first 12 points. He returned a 135 mph serve, engaged in a 10-shot rally, and finished with a drop shot winner. He followed it up with a forehand winner, a sharp return that forced Fritz into the net, and a net-cord shot off a 128 mph return for a swift break.
Serving and Net Play Dominate
Alcaraz himself served as fast as 137 mph and won 20 of 24 service points in the opening set, including six aces. He went for serve-and-volley three times — and won all three, including one flawless stop volley.
Over the entire match, Alcaraz came to the net 41 times and won 31 of those points.
Fritz’s Brilliance Not Enough
Though Taylor Fritz played brilliantly, showcasing dazzling shots with his bright orange racket — shots that would have defeated most opponents — Carlos Alcaraz is no ordinary rival. He has become one of the biggest names in world tennis, and once again, he proved why.
