[Moscow, July 2, 2025] — Russian President Vladimir Putin and French President Emmanuel Macron held a direct phone conversation for the first time in nearly three years. According to the Kremlin, the request for the call came from the French side.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said on Wednesday that the two leaders held a “very important and in-depth” discussion on Tuesday that lasted for nearly two hours. The primary focus of the conversation was two major international issues: the Iran-Israel conflict and the war in Ukraine.
This phone call marks the first direct contact between the two leaders since their last conversation in September 2022.
Analysts believe that this return to dialogue after such a long hiatus could signal a new phase in Russia-France diplomatic relations, especially against the backdrop of mounting crises in Europe and the Middle East.
