Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid has called for an end to the 20-month-long war in Gaza, stating that the conflict benefits no one in Israel except Prime Minister Netanyahu. Instead, the country is suffering security, political, and economic damage.

Speaking at a meeting with his party’s parliament members, he said,
“Continuing the Gaza war is only causing harm to Israel — no political gain, security under threat, and the economy is collapsing.”

“The military shares our position” — Lapid
Lapid further stated that the Israeli military shares his party’s stance.

Quoting Israeli Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir, he said,
“Yesterday at the cabinet meeting, the Chief of Staff said the political leadership must now determine the next goal.”

According to Lapid,
“This statement means that the military has no further military objectives in Gaza.”

Pressure Mounts on Netanyahu
Analysts say Lapid’s remarks and the military’s stance will increase pressure on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to stop the war.

Discontent within Israel is growing over the prolonged conflict and its political failures.

Political and Economic Realities Since the Start of the Gaza War

  • Israeli economy has suffered losses worth billions of shekels

  • Reconstruction and military expenses have increased several-fold

  • Political divisions have deepened — differences and weaknesses are evident within the governing coalition

Increasing International Pressure
Although the United States and Western allies have repeatedly called for a humanitarian ceasefire, Netanyahu’s government remains determined to continue the war. Now, even the country’s opposition and military are questioning this decision.

This situation signals a major change in Israel’s internal politics and could raise new questions about Netanyahu’s leadership and the government’s stability.
