German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has stated that Israel’s ongoing military offensive in the Gaza Strip can no longer be legitimized as merely a “fight against terrorism.” He emphasized that the attacks are causing a humanitarian catastrophe for civilians and are now "no longer acceptable under any circumstances."
In a televised interview with German broadcaster WDR, Merz said:
“The scale of destruction being inflicted upon the civilian population—especially in recent days—can no longer be justified under the pretext of counterterrorism against Hamas.”
He further stated:
“I do not understand what the Israeli army is doing in Gaza, to be very clear.”
Chancellor Merz revealed that he plans to speak with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu by phone later this week to warn him against “going too far.” However, he acknowledged that Germany has historically been more restrained in criticizing Israel compared to other European nations due to its past.
On the ICC Arrest Warrant
Merz's sharp remarks come in the context of growing international pressure. Earlier this year, in February, he had stated that even if the International Criminal Court (ICC) were to issue an arrest warrant against Netanyahu for alleged war crimes, he would still ensure the Israeli leader could visit Germany.
Germany, being a member state of the ICC, is technically obligated to arrest individuals under ICC warrants. However, the court lacks its own enforcement mechanism, and compliance depends on the willingness of member states.
Merz’s recent comments reflect the mounting global concern over Israel’s military actions in Gaza. With increasing allegations of human rights violations, international pressure on Israel is steadily growing.
