U.S. President Donald Trump has said there is a possibility of meeting Russian President Vladimir Putin during his scheduled visit to Saudi Arabia in mid-May. While no final decision has been made yet, Trump mentioned that Putin is “considering” the idea.

Speaking to reporters after returning to the White House from Florida on Sunday, Trump said, “I don’t know, we’ll have to think about it... I haven’t thought about it yet.” He added, “We’ll be heading to Saudi Arabia very soon.”

According to Russia’s TASS news agency, Trump is expected to visit Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates between May 13 and 16 as part of his regional trip.

Trump’s remarks come at a time when he has publicly expressed frustration over the slow progress in ongoing negotiations to end the Russia-Ukraine war. “In recent days, there have been some very good discussions regarding Russia and Ukraine,” he said, although he did not provide further details about the diplomatic talks.

Previously, on March 18, Trump and Putin held a phone conversation where they discussed a potential 30-day ceasefire in the Ukraine crisis, de-escalation conditions, and several international issues. During that call, Trump proposed mutual restraint to prevent further attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, a suggestion Putin reportedly agreed to.

U.S. State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce stated that direct communication between the Russian and American leaders is crucial to resolving the Ukraine conflict. The current strategy of the Trump administration marks a shift from previous U.S. positions and is seen as one of the major foreign policy challenges of his second presidency.

Experts believe that if a Trump-Putin meeting does take place in Saudi Arabia, it could play a significant role in shaping the future course of the Russia-Ukraine war.
