There have been widespread protests across Turkey calling for the release of Istanbul’s imprisoned mayor, Ekrem İmamoğlu, who is currently incarcerated on corruption charges. Supporters claim that millions of people have taken to the streets in opposition to İmamoğlu’s arrest. While there are no official statistics, experts believe that this is the largest anti-government protest in the past decade.

İmamoğlu has faced several serious charges, including “forming and managing a criminal organization, taking bribes, intimidation, illegally recording personal information, and rigging tenders.” He has denied all the allegations. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated that anyone accused of a crime should be judged in court, and that problems will not be solved through "public protests."

In contrast, the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader, Özgür Özel, has expressed support for the protests and started a petition calling for İmamoğlu’s release. He has called for various protests, including a one-day commercial boycott.

Why is İmamoğlu Popular?

Since being elected mayor in 2019, İmamoğlu has worked extensively on improving Istanbul’s infrastructure, social services, and cultural heritage. His popularity has grown due to his gentle, friendly, and approachable personality. Experts suggest that his political persona is widely accepted, making him a rare exception in Turkey’s polarized politics.

However, İmamoğlu has not always been praised. In 2019, despite a flood warning in Turkey, İmamoğlu’s preparations were found lacking, which led to criticism. Additionally, in 2020, allegations of excessive spending emerged regarding Istanbul's municipality.

What Happens Now?

Despite the ongoing charges and the cancellation of his university degree, CHP has nominated İmamoğlu as a potential candidate for the next presidential election. His imprisonment, however, reduces his chances of running for president in 2028. Nonetheless, CHP continues to support him, and there are concerns in political circles that, like Erdoğan, İmamoğlu's career could eventually lead to major success in Turkish politics.

Given the massive public support and the heated political situation in Turkey, it remains to be seen whether these protests will lead to İmamoğlu’s release. Time will tell.
