A tragic stampede occurred during the celebration of Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) winning their first IPL (Indian Premier League) title at a cricket stadium in Karnataka, southern India. The IPL is the world’s most popular Twenty20 cricket tournament.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said on Wednesday, “No one expected such a massive crowd. Although the stadium’s capacity is only 35,000, between 200,000 to 300,000 people had gathered there.”

He confirmed, “11 people have died and 33 others were injured.”

The incident happened Wednesday morning outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka, where thousands of supporters had gathered to celebrate the team’s victory.

India’s NDTV channel also reported at least 11 deaths. Local TV channels showed footage of police and ambulances evacuating the injured and unconscious.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar told reporters, “The crowd was completely out of control.”

It is noted that Royal Challengers Bengaluru won their first IPL title on Tuesday. Large-scale stampedes during public gatherings are unfortunately common in India. Earlier this year in January, at least 30 people died in a stampede while thousands of Hindu pilgrims were bathing in a holy river during the Maha Kumbh Mela—the world’s largest religious congregation.
